Default Guidance to pre-treatment required

I was wondering if you could provide some guidance with respect to the degree of pre-treatment required before a granulated activated carbon filter to maximize its lifespan.

1. What would be the bare minimum sediment removal (in microns) needed before a GAC filter and,
2. What is your recommended level of sediment removal (in microns) before the GAC filter?

Default Re: Guidance to pre-treatment required

would like to answer your question with reference to a particular filter. Let's say this one: GAC-10 water filters and Pentek GAC10 drinking water filter 155109 from Ametek, USFilter, and Culligan

This filter will capture sediment larger than 20 microns, therefore it would be best to pre-filter at a minimum of 20 microns. Having said that, we almost always recommend 5 micron pre-filtration, unless there is a really heavy sediment load, in which case we would recommend multi stage pre-filtration.

Thank you,
