Default Test Local Lake Water for Safety of Swimming

I am currently working on a science fair project and I have decided that I will test local lake waters for the safety of swimming.

Are there any tests that you recommend that I could use to compare the cleanliness of different lakes to determine which would be the safest to swim in.

Since I will need to test the lake waters several times each to show repeatability, I also need to find a test that is inexpensive.

Any help that you could provide would be a great help to the success of my project.

Here is a good test kit for science projects if you have some classmates that need to do the same thing that you are doing.
WaterSafe WS-425SPT Science Project Water Test Kit

If you want the highest number of tests at the most affordable price, I would recommend this system:
Complete Sensafe Home Water Quality Test Kit 481199 Industrial Test Systems

Thank you,

First of all, can you describe the lake? Is it a small private lake or a large public access body of water? Shallow or deep? Is it lined by homes, towns, cities? Industriial or commercial waste? Farm run off, wildlife or domestic stock nearby?

Is there a history or documentation of past water conditions? Research is a valuable tool before testing is planned; it is easier when you know what you are looking for.

Safety can involve identifying toxins, pathogens, or irritants carried by gas, liquid, solid states, or microscopic organisms. Does your safey involve consumption or physical emersion. Safety for a beach scene may be very different than that of providing a beverage. Have your thesis well understood and your project will go smoothly.

The test kit above would be an excellent training tool and demonstration kit. If your interests continue, far more complex testing and results can be realized. Water can be fascinating subject.
