Default Need Help Designing a Solution

Hello all...I've had an idea to ease some water trouble we've been having out here on the farm, but I don't know enough about what's out there to make it happen without time and cash consuming trial and error. We have very hard well water, plus hydrogen sulfide at certain times of the year...although that's not really a problem if we let the water run for 10 seconds.

We just bought a new (to us) refrigerator with icemaker + water/ice at the door...similar to, but larger than the old one. The old one was replaced because the ice maker started sticking, and making hollow cubes...until it eventually flooded the freezer, and the kitchen. We've had our new fridge for 6 months, and worked flawlessly until last month, when it started doing the exact same thing. This fridge is top of he line, and only a few years old (no warranty), but we're pretty sure at this point that the water is causing the problem.

My proposed solution:

Install a shut off valve, connected to the little copper tubing, couple up with the braided icemaker line...that way we don't have to shut off water to the entire kitchen just to mess with the fridge...I can figure that one out. However, I was wondering if there's some sort of inline water softener that I can add to that contraption that would ease this continuing problem. The fridge has a filtration system, but after a few months of use, there is some mineral deposit build up on the little splash tray.

Any ideas?

PS: I'm a teacher, and my wife is a horse trainer in a crappy market...so a full-house water softener system is out of our budget.

Thanks!

Anyone? Are there even in-line softeners that would actually work?

Bueller...Bueller...

It would not be cost effective to only soften the water on that small line – you also probably don’t have the room. A whole-house softener, combined with some sort of inline filter is the only way you’ll be truly happy with the water from that line. Shop around, they aren’t always really expensive, and can pay for themselves in improved appliance life.

Hi;

The OhSoft water softener is designed to be used for water treatment at the point of use. With the small demand placed on it by the fridge, there would simply be fewer recharges required.
