Default How to remove 'white dust' constituents. (hydrosonic humidifiers)

I have a hydrosonic humidifier. It causes small amounts of a white dust to settle around the apartment. This is apparently caused by the sodium and calcium in our water. I would imagine that other minerals could also cause this white dust. To my knowledge, our water is not excessively hard and is not softened.

I would like to find a way to filter out the minerals that are causing the white dust. I would also like the benefits of removing chlorine and other such things from City water.

I'd rather not use a reverse osmosis system because I don't agree with the water waste that occurs. I would also like to keep modifications to the plumbing to a minimum.

Are there any water filters that could help me with this? Do I need to test the water first?

Thanks.

Reverse Osmosis is the best path, because it removes everything that’s dissolved in the water. When you factor the amount of water used just for drinking and for a humidifier, it’s really not that much
