Filtering out "big stuff"

We have a cottage on Lake Ontario and currently we draw water out of the lake with just a container in the lake full of rocks and a metal filter on the end of the water pipe as the filtration system. I am looking for filters that will just get out the 'big' stuff in the water. RIght now the seaweed pieces and dirt are clogging up the plumbing system. We have no desire to make the water drinkable, just cleaner so it does not clog the shower, toilet etc. We are usually up at the cottage on weekends June-Mid Sept. Please advise.

What size Mesh would be appropriate? I think that the polyester filter will work since there will be some kinds of organic material that comes through the filter. Is that true?

We normally recommend a 100 mesh
