Default Iron

I purchased a system about 10 years ago from someone else and have never changed media in tank. According to the installer's tests they have 2 ppm iron and pH 6.5. Tank size is listed as 10X50 and installer has "Birm" listed as the filter -- apparently referring to the type media. What would you recommend for media?

With Iron below 3ppm you could go with this system Iron Reduction Whole House Water Filter Cartridge System by Pentek It will require a bit more maintenance than the other option I will give you, but it offers the advantage of low upfront cost. The other way to go is with something like this Iron Whole House Water Filter W-410-CFA by American Plumber for Chemical-Free Iron Reduction Which requires alot less maintenance, but is more expensive up front.

Thank you,

Although the birm media is used for iron removal, you need two parameters to make it work. A minimum of 6.9 pH and 15% dissolved oxygen. Do you have an air pump or venturi on the line ahead of the filter?

I have found limited success with birm filters. They media may need a dump-n-rebed. The venturi may need to be cleaned.

Another option would be a softener. Depending on your hardness, a softener would remove ferrous iron and have additional benefits. At 3ppm iron, I would be afraid to recommend a passive filtration system as it would load up rather quickly.
