Although the birm media is used for iron removal, you need two parameters to make it work. A minimum of 6.9 pH and 15% dissolved oxygen. Do you have an air pump or venturi on the line ahead of the filter?
I have found limited success with birm filters. They media may need a dump-n-rebed. The venturi may need to be cleaned.
Another option would be a softener. Depending on your hardness, a softener would remove ferrous iron and have additional benefits. At 3ppm iron, I would be afraid to recommend a passive filtration system as it would load up rather quickly.
