Default RO water filter system replacement cycle

The RO water filter system I ordered was for my father, who lives alone and is away from his home at least 25% of the year. Therefore, his usage will be very very low, at least compared to a family of four.

I’m pretty sure that when suggesting a replacement cycle . . . every 3 months for the sediment filter, every year for the carbon filter, etc . . . that assumptions are being made about usage. Are these filters each rated for a number of gallons? Can I put a water meter on the line to measure usage and change the filters based on that data? What if it takes my father 3 years to achieve the rated life of the carbon filter? Will it degrade over time, or will it be ok?
