A larger filter would hold more of the rust particles so it would need changing less often.

Here is a 20" Big Blue housing with a 5 micron sediment filter:

I wouldn't think you would want the rust particles to go into the house since it would cause discoloring in the showers, tubs, and not help the life of the appliances.

You could use the larger mesh size so it didn't clog up with smaller particles but then use the larger filter (20" x 4.5") to filter out the smaller particles.
